Business leaders will have to change their approach
As we are still in the early weeks of the new year, I want to share with you some food for thought in form of a TED-Talk. I have only recently come across it even though it has been published on YouTube in May 2019 already but as it resonated very strongly with me, I decided to share it in this blog. It is a conversation between Halla Tómasdóttir and Bryn Freedman about the current crisis of leadership.
Halla Tómasdóttir is an Icelandic business person and public speaker. She was a member of the founding team of Reykjavík University in 1998. Halla also co-founded Auður Capital, an investment firm.
Bryn Freedman is an award-winning executive producer, journalist and author. She has worked at ABC, NBC, The Oprah Winfrey Network, Lifetime, A&E, History Channel, TLC, and the Discovery Channel.
In their talk Mrs. Tómasdóttir points out that the world needs a new type of leadership which is a mix of courage and humility to deal with the world’s challenges present and ahead. Organisations in which these leaders are positioned must have a moral compass with a strong social element. Companies do not only need to know their purpose, the WHY of their existence, but also HOW they exist in the context of this purpose, meaning how they bring their purpose to life.
She considers three principles essential for organisations to be successful in the future. These are:
- sustainability
- equality
- accountability

A strong message
Some food for thought on how each of us wants to take up his or her own leadership responsibility and the responsibilities coming with an organisational leadership role. I strongly support Mrs.Tómasdóttirs views and am convinced she is right. Therefore, I am committed to do my best in supporting leaders in their quest to follow that route.
